Pittsfield and Pike County
Pittsfield and Pike County: Pittsfield, the second largest community in the District, has a population of 4,200 and is the county seat of Pike County, which has a population of 17,500. Pike County includes a rich agricultural base, a variety of businesses and industries, and many thriving rural towns, as well as four weekly newspapers and a radio station. Major employers in Pike County are Illini Community Hospital, Pikeland School District, and the Illinois Department of Corrections, which operates a minimum security camp near Pittsfield. The county also has a rich history. President Abraham Lincoln had a historical connection with almost every town in Pike County; Pittsfield boasts the largest number of still-standing buildings with a Lincoln connection, and Pittsfield offers a Talking Houses Tour featuring 11 different Lincoln-related sites. JWCC has offered coursework in Pike County since 1975 and has operated a center there since 1979.
