Presidential & Trail Blazer Scholarships

We are looking for the next student leader scholars at JWCC. Presidential and Trail Blazer Scholars are high achieving leaders, both in and out of the classroom. Scholarship students are college ambassadors, participate with Student Government, various JWCC events, and are student leaders on campus.

Students will compete for three two-year Presidential full in-district tuition Scholarships sponsored by the JWCC Foundation. Twelve Trail Blazer Leadership Scholarships will be awarded based on application scores only.

The Presidential Scholarship competition involves an application component and those who score in the top 10 of applications will be invited to an interview process with JWCC representatives.

  • Presidential Scholarships: 3.5 minimum GPA- full-tuition, 3 awarded each year, renewable for 4 consecutive semesters
  • Trail Blazer Scholarships: 3.0 minimum GPA- half-tuition, 12 awarded each year, renewable for 4 consecutive semesters.

JWCC Presidential Scholarship Details

The John Wood Community College (JWCC) Presidential Scholarship offers full in-district tuition (up to 16 credit hours per semester) for selected students who engage with the JWCC Foundation and build connections with donors and alumni. The scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters, contingent on meeting eligibility criteria and fulfilling requirements.

Eligibility Highlights:

  • Academic Performance: Minimum 3.5 high school GPA (unweighted, 4.0)
  • Enrollment: At least 12 credit hours starting Fall semester.
  • FAFSA Requirement: FAFSA must be submitted prior to the scholarship being able to be applied to student’s account.
  • Community Engagement: Demonstrated commitment to community service and JWCC’s mission.
  • Scholarship Obligations: Participation in JWCC Foundation events, donor engagement, and promotional activities.

  • Transcript verifying GPA.
  • Resume showcasing service and leadership experience.
  • Personal statement on community impact and paying it forward.
  • FAFSA submission confirmation.
  • Initial Review: Applications are reviewed for academic and community engagement qualifications. Applicants with the top 10 scores will be invited for interviews.

Selected candidates interview with a panel of JWCC representatives.

Panel evaluates candidates on goals, communication skills, and alignment with JWCC’s values and scholarship responsibilities.

Evaluation Criteria:

Candidates are scored on a 100-point scale based on:

  • GPA and Academic Potential (20 points).
  • Resume Quality (10 points).
  • Personal Statement Depth (20 points).
  • Interview Performance (50 points), focusing on communication, enthusiasm, and commitment to scholarship responsibilities.

Selection and Notification: Award recipients are selected based on total scores, with ties going to highest GPA.  If the GPA is a tie, the top commitment score will be used. Recipients are notified in writing and must accept their award by March 14, 2025. If not accepted, an offer will be made to the applicant with the next highest score.
