- Mike Terry – Teaching Students Based on What’s Relevant
JWCC President Dr. Bryan Renfro and Professor Mike Terry discuss education and share their views on connecting with students, teaching strategies, and how higher education can impact lives.
Terry discusses how he initially wanted to be a TV or radio sports commentator, but after a conversation with a friend in college, he decided to major in English and incorporate his love for sports and music into his teaching. He explains how he uses sports and music as cultural touch points to build relationships with his students and how he has had to actively engage with popular culture to better connect with them. Terry also emphasizes the importance of building meaningful relationships with student-athletes, as he has done as a coach.
