Job Description
This is a full-time, nine-month, tenure track, bargaining unit position that reports to the Dean of Arts, Sciences, and Academic Support Programs and is located on the main JWCC campus in Quincy, Illinois. Position begins Fall semester 2025.
John Wood Community College (JWCC) is seeking a dedicated and experienced full-time Instructor of Psychology/Sociology to join our Arts & Sciences Division. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a range of courses in psychology and sociology, contributing to student success through high-quality instruction, and engaging in service to the college community. KEY RESPONSIBILIES
- Responsible for teaching 15 credit hours per semester, which may include classes during the day or evening.
- Classes may be in an in-person setting at any JWCC center, hybrid, or online.
- Teach a variety of courses in psychology and sociology depending on varying enrollment needs of the college and department, including but not limited to Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Sociology.
- Develop syllabi and course materials or updates as needed that align with department standards and course outcomes.
- Engage students in active learning, using a range of instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Maintain office hours to provide academic support.
- Assess student performance and provide timely feedback on assignments, exams, and other course deliverables.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and improve curriculum and participate in departmental and college-wide initiatives.
- Participate in college service, including committee work, student recruitment activities, and professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Master’s degree in Psychology OR a Master’s degree in Sociology with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the other discipline.
- Must be credentialed to teach both Psychology and Sociology courses.
- The successful candidate must be fully credentialed per Higher Learning Commission and the Illinois Community College Board standards upon the date of hire.
Experience:
- Previous teaching experience at the community college level is strongly preferred.
- Experience with online or hybrid course delivery is a plus and experience teaching through multiple delivery methods is preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of psychology and sociology, with the ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in both fields.
- Recent and relevant work experience preferred.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment that fosters student success.
- Proficiency in educational technology and online learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).
