John Wood Community College’s Community Based Outreach will offer a variety of unique and educational classes to the public in September. All classes will be offered at JWCC’s Quincy campus at 48th and Harrison.
Tai Chi for Health will be held on Tuesdays, September 24, October 1, 8, 22, 29 and November 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Learn this gentle, slow motion exercise from China. Similar to walking in its exertion level, Tai Chi will lubricate joints, improve cardiovascular health, aid concentration, reduce stress and improve mood. The instructor is Jessica Myers. Cost is $70.
Aeroponic Gardening Will be held Tuesday, September 24, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Explore a new vertical gardening technique using a Tower Garden (aeroponic system). Learn how to garden both inside and outside, 12 months a year without weeding or watering worries. Class discussions will also touch on how to use tower gardening with children in the classroom, daycares or community settings. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. Cost is $35.
Mindfulness: Weaving it into Everyday Life will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Incorporate mindfulness into your everyday life. In this interactive session, you will be introduced to relaxing and healing mindfulness techniques that can be used anywhere. Learn how it can help with weight control, mental clarity and relaxation. No experience needed. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. Cost is $35.
You Are What You Eat will take place on Monday, September 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Examine the relationship between genetics and nutrition in this two-hour session. Analyze how the human genome is influenced by diet and nutrition, how foods can heal your DNA and help exert a positive influence on your genetic expression. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. Cost is $35.
Mom’s Cooking will be held Wednesday, September 25, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Explore new ways to prepare healthier family meals. Join us and experiment with creative ideas that will incorporate fun into meal time prep for the entire family. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. Cost is $40.
Spanish for Beginners will be held Tuesday and Saturday, October 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and October 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This interactive course is taught by a native Spanish speaker and is designed as an introductory course for absolute beginners. This course will help establish a strong foundation and promote future success in learning the Spanish language. Put your knowledge into practice with your classmates and leave with resources to study at home. The instructor is Ignacio Anguiano-Reyes. Cost is $50.
Backyard BBQ and Smoking will be held Fridays, October 4, 11 and 18, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Learn backyard BBQ, smoking and grilling techniques and the basic science behind the BBQ process. Participants will learn how to identify and cook various cuts of meat on the smoker or grill. Learn how to season meat properly, build a rub and the basics of brining and injecting. The instructor is Phillip Darnell. Cost is $75.
Taste Bud Tours Through the Globe will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first course, Emphasis on Asia (Philippines/China), will be held October 8, 10, 15 and 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The second course, Emphasis on Ottoman Empire (Persia, Morocco, Jordan), will be held on November 5, 7, 12 and 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Take your taste buds on a journey around the world and enjoy a variety of international flavors. During each class, you will create and sample a dish from that evening’s featured country. Prepare to expand your taste buds as you savor new cuisines. The instructor is Mary Lou McLaughlin. Cost for each course is $55.
Basic Cake Decorating will be held on Wednesdays, October 9, 15 and 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Learn how to dress up your favorite desserts with these basic skills and how to bake and prepare cakes for decorating. You will also learn the basics for cake writing, borders, simple flowers, piping, making buttercream icing, and the easiest ways to ice a cake. The instructor is Karen Wagner. Cost is $55.
