The John Wood Community College Board of Trustees, meeting in Quincy Wednesday evening April 24, voted to freeze tuition rates for the upcoming academic year.
The current tuition rates per credit hour for in-district, out-of-district and online instruction will remain the same for the 2019-20 academic year. This is the third straight year JWCC has frozen the base tuition rate for students.
“Providing accessible education at an exceptional value is part of our mission and it contributes to students’ success now and later in life,” JWCC President Michael Elbe said. “Holding the line on tuition as much as we can helps students save on their overall cost of education whether they transfer to a four-year university or engage in skill training to begin or advance their career.”
The Board also held its reorganizational meeting and election of officers. Prior formally reorganizing, Trustees observed a moment of silence in remembrance of former Trustee Reggie Coleman who served on the JWCC Board for 18 years. Coleman passed away in March.
Newly elected Trustees, Andy Sprague of Kinderhook and Dr. Randy Greenwell of Quincy, took the Oath of Office to serve six-year terms.
Trustees voted to elect Larry Fischer of Quincy as chair of the Board; Diane Ary of Quincy as vice chair and Bob Rhea of Camp Point as secretary. Trustees also voted to have Jim Gay of Rockport, Fischer and Ary to serve as the Board’s Executive Committee. As chair, Fischer appointed trustees to the following Board committees: Finance and Audit: Sprague and Rhea; Curriculum: Greenwell and Don Hess of Quincy. Fischer appointed Sprague as the Board’s representative to the Illinois Community College Trustees (ICCTA) Association.
Macyn Seaver of Macomb was selected by JWCC’s student body and took the Oath of Office as the College’s Student Trustee for 2019-20. Trustees recognized outgoing Student Trustee Madeline Davis of Camp Point who served from 2018-19.
In other business, the Board:
Authorized submission of a $225,470 grant to the Illinois Community College Board to provide instruction and support services for adult learners to obtain knowledge and skills for employment and self-sufficiency.
Authorized submission of a $53,815 grant to the Illinois Department on Aging to support Retired and Senior Volunteer Program efforts in Adams, Brown and Pike counties.
Approved deletion of Board Policies 415 and 416 regarding military credit and experiential learning credit and approved corresponding Board Policy 426 to encompass all credit for prior learning to comply with recently adjusted Illinois Community College Board System Administration rules.
Approved posthumous conferral of the distinction of Professor Emeritus during JWCC’s 2019 Commencement to Joyce Miller-Boren. She served as department chair and professor of developmental education at JWCC for 36 years. Miller-Boren passed away in 2015.
The next regular meeting of the Board will be held Wednesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at the JWCC campus in Quincy.
