JWCC’s Community-Based Outreach Offering Classes this Fall

John Wood Community College’s Community-Based Outreach is offering a variety of non-credit learning opportunities to the public this fall. Classes will be a mix of in-person and virtual instruction using Zoom. All in-person classes will be held at John Wood’s Quincy campus and will follow JWCC safety guidelines in regard to social distancing and face coverings.

Classes available for the month of September include the following:

Basic Excel is a three-evening seminar for individuals who have little or no background with Excel and want to learn more. The interactive course will offer practice and application to sharpen skills. Classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursday, September 29, October 1 and 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Rita Schmitt is the instructor and the cost is $60.

Mastering Zoom Presentation Skills for Boomers is an in-person class that will explore Zoom software, and how to present and connect with all types of groups. Students will learn how to master this skill set to offer a more effective presence and presentation. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, September 29 and October 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Dr. Margie Williams is the instructor and the cost is $40.

Basic Floral Design will be held on Tuesdays, September 29 and October 6, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students will learn basic floral design for centerpieces and vases and how to take a grocery store bunch of flowers to create arrangements. Students should bring their own cutting tools or clippers. The instructor is Nancy Mead and the cost is $60.

Drawing Techniques will be held on Tuesdays, September 29, October 6 and 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Students will learn simple strategies that professionals use to illustrate tough subjects. Students are asked to bring drawing paper, drawing pencil, an object to draw and a headshot photo of a person to draw. The instructor is Laura Bergman and the cost is $35.

Tai Chi for Health will explore Tai Chi, a gentle, slow-motion exercise from China. Similar to walking in its exertion level, Tai Chi can lubricate joints, improve cardiovascular health, aid concentration, reduce stress and improve mood. This class will be taught virtually with Zoom. The class will meet Tuesdays, September 29, October 6, 13, 20, 27 and November 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. The instructor is Jessica Myers and the cost is $30.

Weaving Mindfulness Into Everyday Life will be offered virtually via Zoom on Monday September 28 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This interactive session will introduce relaxing and healing mindfulness techniques that can be used anywhere. Learn how these techniques can help with weight control, mental clarity and relaxation. No experience needed. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams and the cost is $20.
